This from the Dallas Morning News:

Chrysler’s plan to separate Ram trucks from Dodge has experts scratching their heads

Fifteen years ago, the radically restyled Dodge Ram pickup established Dodge as a brawler of a brand – a division fond of kicking down design doors.

Now, as the Chrysler Group limps out of bankruptcy, the company wants to see whether Dodge and Ram – its rowdy cowboys – can live apart.

In a move some analysts seriously question, Chrysler’s new boss – Sergio Marchionne, chief executive of the Fiat Group – is separating the two. Although the Ram will continue to carry Dodge badging, it will become a stand-alone brand at Chrysler dealerships that will include other truck models from Dodge and Fiat.

“We have the equity in the truck market now to do it,” said Fred M. Diaz, president and CEO of the Ram brand, who was in Dallas recently to accept a Truck of the Year award for the heavy-duty Ram pickup from Motor Trend magazine. “This gives Dodge space to develop its own identity outside the Ram brand.”

The move baffles California consultant Todd Turner.

“I keep trying to recall if I have ever heard anyone say they had a Ram without calling it a Dodge Ram,” said Turner, president of Car Concepts in Thousand Oaks. “It makes no sense to me.”

Likewise, industry observer George Hoffer wonders whether Fiat is effectively spinning off the Ram brand for a possible sale.

“Since they did it, I’ve thought they were separating the brand so it could be sold outright or sold as a line of pickups in other [non-Chrysler] dealerships,” said Hoffer, a business professor at Virginia Commonwealth University who follows the auto industry.

Pushing cars

Diaz said Chrysler just wants healthy car and truck brands from the split.

For the last couple of decades, Chrysler has been heavily dependent on the sales of large pickups and minivans, with more than 70 percent of the company’s revenue generated by those vehicles.

The new company plans to pump up Chrysler’s car line and push car and crossover sales to 50 percent of Chrysler’s total.

“That is our intent so we are not so heavily dependent on the success of trucks and minivans,” said Diaz, a native of San Antonio.

Over the next couple of years, Dodge dealers will be asked to set aside separate space for the Ram but won’t be required to build new facilities for the truck. About 85 percent of Chrysler’s U.S. dealers already sell Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge models, Diaz said.

Initially, consumers won’t notice much difference at their neighborhood Dodge dealerships. But over time, they will see different sorts of trucks under the Ram brand, some of them commercial vehicles new to the U.S.

In addition, the lineup is likely to include a midsize truck to replace the Dodge Dakota after 2011, Diaz said. The truck will probably be considerably smaller than the Dakota, which is as big as full-size pickups were 10 years ago.

Ray Huffines, one of Chrysler’s biggest local dealers, said he wasn’t concerned about the planned changes with Ram.

“As long as they’re all under the same roof, it won’t affect us too much,” said Huffines, CEO of Huffines Auto Dealerships, which includes Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge stores in Plano and Lewisville. “We’ll probably just have to change our signs.”

But how will the split affect Dodge, whose only car strong enough to draw consumers into showrooms is the relatively new Challenger?

“Why keep a brand for such a limited lineup?” asked Turner, the California consultant. “You have to wonder about the strategy.”

The mpg factor

Through November, Dodge had sold 475,095 vehicles, according to Automotive News, down 35.5 percent from the same period in 2008. The Ram, the Dodge minivan and other truck products accounted for about 70 percent of Dodge’s sales.

Meanwhile, automakers face a daunting federal fuel economy standard in 2016 – a 35.5 mile-per-gallon average for everything they sell – that is likely to force them to dial back their sales of big trucks.

But Diaz expects Fiat to begin supplementing the car side with vehicles, refined engines and new technology that will rejuvenate Dodge.

“I feel very confident about our future,” he said. “Everyone was involved in putting those [sales] goals together. We bought into those goals.”

This isn’t breaking news but I found this article in my latest copy of Construction Equipment Magazine and liked the way they wrote it up. It’s about the Ford Powerstroke design/production being brought in house away from Navistar for the 2011 models.

Use the comment field to let us know what you think of these changes to the Powerstroke.

Ford’s 2011-model F-SuperDuty pickup trucks are getting two new engines and a 6-speed automatic transmission with a live-drive power take-off, plus fresh interiors including new seats and a “flow-through” console with a 110-volt inverter. The F-250 through 550 pickups and chassis-cab models will continue with the bold exterior styling introduced in the ‘08 model year and computer-based Ford Work Solutions options.

The new 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel was designed and will be built by Ford itself to replace 6- and 6.4-liter V-8s supplied by Navistar International. The long-running agreement ends in December following financial and legal squabbling between the two companies, and the Ford diesel will go into production in Chihuahua, Mexico, next year, Ford executives say.

The new diesel will be optional in 2011-model F-250 to F-550 pickups and cab-chassis trucks. It will use selective catalytic reduction to help meet EPA’s 2010 emissions rules. It will eventually replace Ford’s V-10.

The 6.7-liter (409-cubic-inch) Power Stroke’s design includes a compacted graphite cast-iron block and aluminum heads, which help cut weight by 160 pounds compared to the current diesel. It also has inboard-mounted exhaust manifolds and a “single sequential” turbocharger, all bolted inside the cylinder-bank valley. Instead of the current double-turbo scheme, the new turbo has one exhaust turbine and two air-compressor turbines for fast response. Close coupling of exhaust components reduces the amount of piping, which contributes to weight loss.

The new gasoline V-8 has an “oversquare” bore of 102 mm and stroke of 95 mm for a displacement of 6.2 liters or 379 cubic inches. It uses port fuel injection, has two spark plugs and two large valves per cylinder, and a single overhead camshaft with variable valve timing. The engine will burn regular, 87-octane gasoline and any ethanol-gasoline blend up to E85.

The 6.2-liter gasoline engine is to be assembled at Ford’s Romeo, Mich., plant, in time for production of the new SuperDuty, slated for April. Power and torque ratings of the new engines will be announced later.

Both new engines will be mated to the 6-speed TorqShift, designated 6R140, while the current 5-speed TorqShift will be used with other gasoline V-8s. The 6-speed has an enhanced Tow-Haul mode with integrated engine exhaust braking and Progressive Range Select and a Manual mode, allowing drivers to select the gear to suit their needs. It also has optional live PTO capability that can power a plow, trash compactor, dump hoist, salt spreader and mixer while the truck is stationary, on the move or engaged in stop-start operations.

Ford’s 2011 SuperDuty trucks will have higher payload and tow ratings, and pickups will have a fifth wheel and substructure attached to the frame at the factory. An electrical plug is inside the bed for towing gooseneck trailers, and the integrated trailer-brake controller works with the truck’s service brakes for maximum effectiveness and safety.

Here’s an interesting article written by Matt Stone on 9-11-09 that is sure to get Cummins Diesel entusiasts fired up.

Fiat is working hard and fast to integrate Chrysler into its global system, and also looking closely at what Chrysler brands have to offer Fiat in the world marketplace. Whether you favored the Chrysler/Fiat deal or not, it’s done. It’s reasonable to expect changes going forward, and that some of Chrysler’s existing alliances will fall by the wayside in order to bring as many projects into the Fiat tent as will fit. It’s just the biz these days.

For example, Chrysler is sending the Dodge Sprinter back to Mercedes and Freightliner, and will replace it with one or perhaps two Fiat-made vans. Sounds OK: As much as we love the Sprinter, even the smallest one is big, and they’re all on the pricey side. And MBZ is setting up a new distribution arm to sell them to folks who still want one. Fiat makes great commercial vans, can offer them in a wider variety of sizes, and at more competitive price points. The Dodge-engineered Nissan Titan replacement project is also dead.

But one discussion now working its way around the global water cooler has me thinking “Red Flag!” It’s the notion of replacing the Cummins Turbodiesel engine available in Ram HD trucks with a Fiat Powertrain Technology diesel(s) of similar size and capacity. Nothing has been officially announced.

FPT is a world class powertrain developer and builder. Although I’ve not tested them, I suspect their latest diesels are durable, powerful, and competitive. A large number of medium and heavy-duty trucks in Europe are built by Fiat, or use Fiat diesel engines. And they make them up to 22-liters in size, so don’t worry about a tiny four banger ending up under the hood of your Ram 3500. But what Fiat may be missing in all this is the fierce, pry-it-out-of-my-dead-hand loyalty that the Cummins-powered Dodges have engendered.

I remember when the first one came out in the early 80s. Dodge estimated it would sell 30-35,000 Cummins-equipped trucks in the old, pre-94 bodystyle, then call it a day. Well, surprise surprise, the long stroke, low revving, iron-guts six-cylinder Cummins caught and captivated a certain sector of America’s truck users, and Dodge has sold hundreds of thousands of turbodiesels since. As the fuel has gotten better (and is now cheaper than gasoline), the engines more powerful (and cleaner burning), and the acceptance of diesel has grown, the big, throbbing Cummins makes more sense than ever.

What Fiat may not yet be aware of is how much people freaking love these things. There are Cummins truck clubs, drag races, truck pulls, shows, forums, YouTube vids and, for all I know, weddings planned around these trucks. There’s enough aftermarket stuff out there to crank a zillion pounds-feet of torque out of one. When, or should I say “if” someone finally wears out a Cummins-equipped Ram, they usually replace it with another one. It’s the Harley V-Twin of light and medium duty truck engines. The Dodge Cummins faithful may not like the idea of Fiat taking down their hero, no matter how fabulous the theoretical replacement engine may be. It takes years to build a brand, but only a moment to kill one.

So Chrysler: I’m not saying don’t. Just know what your messing with.

Hey, Truck Guys: what do you think?

Wondering where Cummins began and how it came about I stumbled upon this brief history of the company and it’s founder, Clessie Cummins.

“Today, Cummins is a multinational Fortune 500 company that operates and serves customers around the globe. At the same time, Cummins retains strong ties to its Indiana home, where the Company’s headquarters remain.

Cummins’ roots are planted in soil nourished by innovation, persistence and a commitment to community. Founded in Columbus, Ind., in 1919 as Cummins Engine Company, for its namesake Clessie Lyle Cummins, the fledgling firm was among the first to see the commercial potential of an unproven engine technology invented two decades earlier by Rudolph Diesel.

Fortunately for Clessie Cummins, a self-taught mechanic and inventor, his vision was shared by someone with the financial resources to make it a reality: William Glanton (W.G.) Irwin, a successful local banker and investor, who already had provided financial backing for Cummins’ auto mechanic operation and machine shop.

After a decade of fits and starts, during which time the diesel engine failed to take hold as a commercial success, a stroke of marketing hubris by Clessie Cummins helped save the Company. Cummins mounted a diesel engine in a used Packard limousine and on Christmas day in 1929 took W.G. Irwin for a ride in America’s first diesel-powered automobile. Irwin’s enthusiasm for the new engine led to an infusion of cash into the Company, which helped fuel a number of speed and endurance records in the coming years – including a grueling 13,535-mile run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1931. (Watch the video of that event here.) Such feats earned Cummins’ foothold as an engine supplier to the trucking industry.

Still, publicity alone could not carry the Company; Cummins needed reliable products and a sound business organization. In 1933, the company released the Model H, a powerful engine for transportation that launched the company’s most successful engine family. J. Irwin Miller, great-nephew of W.G. Irwin, became general manager in 1934 and went on the lead the company to international prominence over the next four decades. By marketing high-quality products through a unique nationwide service organization, the Company earned its first profit in 1937. Three years later, Cummins offered the industry’s first 100,000-mile warranty.

By the 1950s, America had embarked on a massive interstate highway construction program, with Cummins engines powering much of the equipment that built the roads and thousands of the trucks that began to roll down them. Truckers demanded economy, power, reliability, and durability, and Cummins responded. By combining lab-based research and field-based trials, including dramatic performances at the Indy 500 races, Cummins achieved technological breakthroughs, including the revolutionary PT (pressure-time) fuel injection system of 1954. By the late 1950s, Cummins had sales of over $100 million and a commanding lead in the market for heavy truck diesels.

As Cummins continued to grow its business in the United States, the Company also began looking beyond its traditional borders. Cummins opened its first foreign manufacturing facility in Shotts, Scotland, in 1956 and by the end of the 1960s, Cummins had expanded its sales and service network to 2,500 dealers in 98 countries. Today, Cummins has more than 5,000 facilities in 197 countries and territories.

Cummins, led by the visionary leadership of J. Irwin Miller, forged strong ties to emerging countries such as China, India and Brazil, where Cummins had a major presence before most other U.S. multinational companies. Cummins has grown into one of the largest engine makers in both China and India, and for the past three years approximately half of the Company’s sales have been generated outside the United States.

Cummins is no longer just an engine business, but a global power leader with more than $14 billion in sales in 2008. We are a family of inter-related, yet diversified businesses that create or enhance value as a result of doing business with each other or having those relationships.

Cummins is organized around four business segments – Engine, Power Generation, Components Business and Distribution – and provide products and service to customers in more than 150 countries.

Cummins is a technology leader in the diesel engine market, with our employees working relentlessly to provide cutting-edge solutions to the increasingly difficult challenge of producing cleaner-running engines. For example, Cummins was the only company in the industry to meet the 2010 EPA standards for NOx emissions with the release in early 2007 of its new 6.7-liter turbo diesel for the Dodge Ram Heavy Duty pickup.

Clessie Cummins’ spirit of innovation and commitment to quality lives on nearly a century later in the nearly 40,000 Cummins employees who work to design, make and sell products that can be found in nearly every type of vehicle imaginable.”
